The Urban Residence

Here, the visitor encounters a Crete in transition. It is the era of the Cretan State and the Interwar period, a time when urban life was gradually leaving old habits behind and looking toward Europe. Traditional clothing gives way to more “modern” garments, and homes fill with new objects that bring a different spirit to everyday life.

In the display case, the first technological “marvels” of the time stand out: the old film projector, the heavy typewriter,
the imposing gramophone with its records, and the small pieces of furniture that held them — objects that transformed the way people informed themselves, wrote, listened to music, and communicated.

Every object here — from the large photographic camera to the small everyday utensils — speaks of an era filled with excitement, change, and new beginnings. A time when Crete began to blend tradition with modernity, always preserving its own distinctive character.
